About the event
Every year, on 21 February UN member states observe the International Mother Language Day (Following adoption of a UNESCO Resolution (2000), the Day universally celebrates peoples’ diverse linguistic heritage across societies; and underlines the imperative of strengthening harmony – pluralism – diversity amongst communities.) , universally. In 1999, UNESCO General Conference proclaimed International Mother Language Day; followed by endorsement by the UN General Assembly (2000). Afterwards, the UN General Assembly Resolution calls upon all Member States "to promote the preservation and protection of all languages used by peoples of the world". Bangladesh championed the 'idea' to celebrate 21st February as the International Mother Language Day given the history of her people's movement to uphold mother language (in 1952). Seven decades on, Bangladesh stands with every nation to underline deserving attention, respect and significance to value the linguistic heritage of the 7,000+ languages the world over. Bangladesh has been spearheading observance of the International Mother Language Day in the Netherlands, come every 21st February. The Day aims to contribute to the collective tapestry of multi-culturalism and multi-lingualism across our societies. In the Hague, in 2018, a permanent Shaheed Minar (language martyr's monument) was erected at the famous Zuiderpark managed that is managed by the Gemeente The Hague. The Embassy of Bangladesh and Leiden University invites you to join a commemorative event to celebrate “International Mother Language Day” on Wednesday, 21 February at the Leiden University, The Hague Campus (Schouwburgstraat 2, 2511 VA Den Haag; Room: A006).
